Vision For Success
We are ELEVATING BRUNSWICK, a community group formed to be a shared voice for apartment dwellers along the corridor.
Like you, we live along the Upfield line and we’re eager to see this watershed project deliver on its potential for everyone.
We believe the Elevated Upfield rail line should be…
A Good Neighbour

Generous breathing space around the new rail line will reduce the impact of stations and structures so neighbouring residents can still see plenty of sky.
Widening the space in the corridor while building a slender structure will preserve space and natural light, allowing trees to thrive and people to gather.
Carefully designed sound barriers will help everyone near the train line to live comfortably and sleep easily.
Belongs To Brunswick

Brunswick has many layers and stories to reveal, from Country, geology and landscape, to waves of migration, brick pits and industry.
This important piece of infrastructure will celebrate Brunswick’s character. It will make spaces for our many communities and leave some room for us to fill in and have fun with.
Redesigning the corridor presents opportunities to heal unceded Wurundjeri Country. First Nations people will have participation, representation, self-determination and economic benefit.
New stations will feel like they belong. They will be made of real materials that last; recycled, low carbon, not sleek and shiny. Local designers will bring existing heritage buildings to life.
Within Reach of Everyone

Brunswick is one of Melbourne’s densest, most rapidly-growing neighbourhoods. In the elevation of the rail line, everyone is included, whether they take the train or tram, walk, cycle or drive.
Pedestrians and bikes will be prioritised at road crossings, with designs to influence safe driving.
Station entrances will maximise access and minimise walking distances. Public toilets, shade and seating will add amenity.
Safety will be a priority for everyone, with activation to bring eyes on the street, clear visibility to and from stations and lighting.
Good access will be maintained for emergency and utility vehicles and local businesses will be able to thrive.
Designed For Climate

Our changing climate is central to every design decision – structure, construction and landscaping, including end of life for materials.
With so much concrete needed, cement alternatives and innovative materials are used to reduce embodied carbon.
Space and healthy growing conditions for plants will provide shade trees, climbing vegetation and ground cover to reduce Brunswick’s extreme urban heat island effect and soften winter winds.
Porous surfaces and garden areas will manage urban water to reduce flash flooding and provide safe places to gather and shelter.
For All Seasons

Elevating the rail opens up exciting new spaces for Brunswick. Well-sized areas with access to at least three hours of sunlight in the cooler months ensure they are usable.
New parks on land acquired next to the corridor provide gathering spaces for densely packed neighbourhoods, including spots for winter sun and summer shade.
A range of space and uses support our diverse community, with room for individuals and groups of all sizes. Things that are noisy – like sports or concerts – are designed to minimise impact on residents.
Natures Corridor

Local indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses create habitats that support native creatures, increase biodiversity and disrupt invasive species.
Keeping mature trees through construction and design will benefit everyone and everything – from the species who live in hollows to the humans who love shade and oxygen.
We honour and build on our tradition of community action, with space for local creativity that continues the achievements of the Upfield Urban Foresters.
Allocation of ongoing funding for community groups will ensure custodianship of the new landscape in both the near and long term.

What’s important to you?
We think it is important that we all have our say in how this project is shaped – this survey will help us understand the opinion of apartment dwellers.
This will take 5 minutes, there is a chance to rate our 6 priorities and then leave some further feedback.
You and your answers will remain anonymous and be used to inform what we communicate on your behalf to LXRP, etc.
Thank you for helping shape our vision.
